Choosing the Right Fins
Your legs provide the main source of power when you are snorkeling, and the right type of fins help you maximize that power and energy. Comfort is the name of the game when you're looking for just the right set of fins for Key West snorkeling. Understanding the basics gives you an edge when you are in the dive shop.
It's All About the Fit for Snorkeling Fins
Properly fit fins are like a pair of comfortable shoes andndash; you don't even know they're on once you get in the water. If your fins are too tight you'll end up with foot cramps and blisters. Too loose, and blisters are the least of your worries because the fins may slip off at an inopportune moment.
When you first slide on a pair of fins they're going to feel tight and you'll have to squeeze your toes to get your foot in. Fins have minimal give by the nature of the hard polymers used in fin production. That means the arch won't adjust to fit your foot so it's vital that it sits properly from the moment you put the fins on.
Forget About Shoe Size
Fins aren't sized the same way as your shoes, size and fit varies greatly between manufacturers. At best, your shoe size is just a guide. You must try on the fins to find the best fit before beginning your Key West snorkeling adventure. Keep in mind that fins are much easier to put on at the beach than in the store. Your foot will slide in much easier when the fins are wet, so it doesn't matter if you struggle to get them in at the store if they feel comfortable once your foot is in place. Choose fins that are snug but not so tight they feel uncomfortable across your arch.
Find Your Style
Just like everything, fins come in different styles. If you can't find a good fit in one style you can always try another. Common styles include the full foot pocket or the heel strap. Keep in mind, the heel strap style does require dive booties to stay on properly and you must try on the fins while wearing the booties you plan to snorkel with. Although a full pocket may mean less gear, an adjustable strap makes it easier to find the perfect fin for a hard to fit foot. Try both, and make sure to stand up and walk around on the fin a bit. This may feel awkward, but it's the best way to check that everything fits correctly and there that there isn't any unwanted wiggle room.
The secret to a great Key West snorkel trip depends on the right gear from the feet up. With properly fitted fins you can more easily slice through the water, which allows you to spend more time snorkeling and less time fiddling with poorly fit fins. Remember andndash; it's not how awkward they feel on land but how smoothly the fins perform in water that matters.
