Key West Goliath Grouper
Goliath Grouper
Snorkeling and scuba diving are among the most memorable of water activities. They introduce the fortunate few to a world only viewed from the living room couch. Throughout the world, dive locations offer a different experience for those who desire to explore the world beneath the water's surface. Nowhere is this truer than Key West, Florida. Snorkeling in Key West offers some of the most pristine views in the warm, turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A wide assortment of fish and plant life allow the diver to experience an aquatic world within shallow waters. However, deeper dives can provide views of marine life that prefers the oceans depth.
One such species is the Goliath Grouper. While this fish normally dwells in depths comfortable to the ocean's surface, it has been known to dwell in depths greater than 100 feet. It is one of more than 15 species of grouper and is a big reason snorkeling is so popular in Key West. Weighing in at more than 600 pounds, it is a fish of awe inspiring size. Its curious nature allows divers to get up close and personal with very little threat of harm. The Goliath Grouper lives throughout Key West and the Caribbean and is found in a variety of colors. Upon maturity, it has the ability to change sex. Larger males are known to possess as many as 10 to 15 females.
While the Goliath Grouper is not aggressive toward humans, it is notoriously aggressive toward other fish. This lazy appearing predator's diet consists of crab, lobster and a variety of smaller fish. They have also been known to predate upon several species of shark. The Goliath has been the subject of many a naturalist camera and will continue to highlight the experience for those who dive these waters.
